Choosing the Right Adaptive Clothing: Part III

Previously we discussed the importance of fabric and closures when choosing adaptive clothing.  We will present here the importance and convenience of adjustable sizing.  This feature in adaptive clothing can bring back confidence and style in dressing.  Fashion and function come together to create clothing that is adjustable and useful for anyone needing help with dressing.

  For decades styles have been mass produced, and many seniors have had to settle for regular clothing that did not fit well because of either weight gain, weight loss, or other medical condition.  Now we have options for adjustable clothing which incorporate all kinds of features that meet the diverse needs of those with mobility or dexterity issues.  Having garments with different designs that can be customized for adjustable sizing, will ensure a comfortable and secure fit.

One of the most common features of adjustable design is Velcro.  There are so many types of Velcro straps and closures.  It provides for quick and hassle-free dressing and undressing not to mention independence.  Velcro can be at the waist, and down the side of the pant leg, including an easy open and close cuff.  This eliminates having to take shoes off and on so frequently when necessity dictates.  Women’s bras have adjustable front Velcro closures eliminating reaching and awkward stretching.

Elastic waistbands are common and have been around for a long time.  There are certain widths which make for easy and comfortable wear.  Elastic waistbands provide flexibility and comfort accommodating changes in body size and shape.  Clothing with a stretchable waistline won’t slip or become uncomfortable during physical activity.

Adjustable drawstrings can be very helpful in hoodies pants or shorts.  These drawstring can be elastic which give more flexibility when dressing. The drawstring can be easily. cinched together or left loose depending on the need.  There are some adaptive clothing brands which have tastefully placed the drawstrings inside the clothing, eliminating loose ends.

Hook and loop fasteners are also useful although at times more difficult to maneuver and keep lint free.  Velcro is the manufacturer of hook and loop fasteners. They can be a very helpful option in terms of ease of use.

Adaptive clothing can be both flattering and functional.  Adjustable sizing for dressing is high on the list for being sure to get the perfect fit.
